How to place a single bet

Betting on PlayNow no longer requires you to create parlay bets. You can choose to add a single Pick to your Betslip.

The next step is to enter your wager amount by clicking on the wager amount field. Doing this will calculate your potential winnings for the bet and will enable the ‘PLACE BET’ button at the bottom of the Betslip which you should click to place your bet.

You can add up to 20 single picks to your Betslip and can add a different wager amount for each of these and place your bet for all of them at the same time.

How to place a parlay bet

In order to make a parlay bet, select two or more picks to add to your Betslip. Once you have enough combinable picks on your Betslip to create a valid bet, the parlay betting option at the top of the Betslip or below the Singles selections will be displayed. The number of picks you have added to your Betslip will determine the number of parlay options available to bet on.

To place a bet (or multiple bets) enter your wager amount and click on the ‘PLACE BET' button at the bottom of your Betslip when you are ready to place your bet.

Confirming your bet

Now that your wagers have been entered, you are satisfied with your Potential Return (featured near the bottom of the Bet Slip) and have clicked the 'Place Bet' button, you will be displayed a summary of your bet on a confirmation screen.

All-in Play

All-in play means bets having odds reflecting that the competitor may not play or take part in the event. If the Selection does not play or take part in the event, the bet stands as a non-winner.

American Odds

Also sometimes referred to as "Money Line Odds". American odds reveal the amount you must wager or can win on any selection based on $100 increment. If the odds offered on a particular event result are -110, it means that in order to 'win' $100 you would need to bet $110. If the odds are +110, it means that if you wagered $100, you would win $110. In this example you would calculate your payout by also adding your initial stake (wager).

Ante Post

Refers to any bet placed more than a day before the start of an event.

Canadian

A Canadian consists of 26 bets on 5 picks in different events (10 Doubles, 10 Trebles, five 4-Fold parlay and one 5-Fold parlay) Two or more picks must be correct for a winning bet. A $1 Canadian costs $26 ($1 x 26 bets). (Similar to Sports Action Combo Play - Go for 2, (10 two game combos), Go for 3 (10 three game combos), Go for 4 (5 four game combos) and "go for all").

Ongoing availability of Cash Out offers for any given bet is not guaranteed. As such, Players should not place bets with the sole intention to cash them out.

Combination Forecast

A combination forecast is betting on all the possible forecasts between three or more selections. If two of your selections finish first and second in any order then the bet is a winner.

Dead Heat

A Dead Heat refers to an outcome where two or more competitors are tied for the same winning position (according to terms of your bet). In this instance your bet is settled under the 'dead heat reduction rules' for that event.

Dead Heat Reduction Rule

A Dead Heat Reduction is calculated by dividing the wager amount proportionally between the number of winners in the event. So, in a two-way dead heat (2 winners) for example, your return will be half of what was originally projected.

Decimal Odds

The odds expressed as a decimal number. Total odds are determined by multiplying the value (odds) of each selection, and then multiplying by the wager amount. Example: With decimal odds for a two event parlay with 2.50 for one selection, 2.00 for another selection and wager amount of $10, this bet would return $50.

Double

A Double (parlay) is one bet on 2 picks in different events. Both picks in a Double must be correct for a winning bet. (Similar to Sports Action Combo Play -Go for 2).

Double Chance

A "Double Chance" bet requires choosing one of the three selections offered. Each Double Chance selection covers two out of the three possible outcomes (Home win or Draw; Home win or Visitor win; Draw or Visitor win). With a Double Chance bet, you are hedging your bet by betting on TWO of the three possible outcomes in one bet.

Double Result

Also known as "Half Time/Full Time" as it pertains to Soccer betting, this bet requires the prediction of the outcome at half time AND at full time (end of 90 minutes). Double Result rules vary based on sport. Refer to the specific sports rules for full details regarding settlement.
For Soccer - Pick the team to be winning at Half-Time (or tie) AND the result after 90 Minutes.
For Hockey betting- Pick the result at the end of the first period combined with the result at the end of regulation (60 minutes).
For Football and Basketball betting- Pick the team to be winning at Half-Time (or tie) AND the team to win the game at the end of regulation (or the tie).

Draw (Tie) No Bet

A bet where the Player backs both the Win and the Draw so that they profit from a Win and break even from the Draw result.

Forecast

A straight forecast is a bet on two selections to finish first and second in a particular order.

Fractional Odds

Fractional odds: Display is shown as a fraction, where numerator represents amount to win from wager amount shown in denominator.
For example: Odds of 1/3 mean that bettor wins $1 for each $3 staked (thus equal to 1.333... in decimal format), and 2/1 mean that bettor wins $2 for each unit staked (thus equal 3.00 in decimal format). So, with a stake of $100, profit on first bet is $33.33, and on the second bet, profit is $200. Profit is calculated as: wager amount multiplied by the fractional odds.

Full Cover Bet

A Full Cover Bet is a bet which consists of various combinations of parlays available from all picks on the Bet Slip (e.g. Trixie, Patent, Yankee, etc.).

Futures

Half Time/Full Time

Also known as "Double Result". A bet placed on the result at BOTH half time and full time. For soccer matches, it includes a total of 9 outcomes, as compared to 3 outcomes in standard Match betting. Subsequently, odds are significantly higher, especially for outcomes with one team to win at half time and other team to win at full time.
There is often confusion with "Half Time/Full Time" and with the bet "Team to Win Both Halves". For example, if the result of the match Vancouver vs. Portland was 4-0 at half-time and 5-2 at full time, the bet "Vancouver Half Time/Vancouver Full Time" would be a winner; however, the bet "Vancouver to Win Both Halves" would not be a winner, as the result of second half was 1-2 in Portland’s favour.

Heinz

A Heinz consists of 57 bets on 6 picks in different events (15 Doubles, 20 Trebles, fifteen 4-Folds, six 5-Folds and one 6-Folds). Two or more picks must be correct for a winning bet. Remember, a $1 Heinz actually costs you $57 ($1 x 57 bets). (Similar to Sports Action Combo Play - Go for 2, (15 two game combos), Go for 3 (20 three game combos), Go for 4 (15 four game combos), Go for 5 (6 five game combos) and "go for all").

A selection added to the Bet Slip.

Point Spread

A Point Spread bet helps even the odds of any particular sporting event by subtracting points from the favoured competitor and subsequently adding the same amount of points to the weaker competitor. Each team has points either added or subtracted from the final score, to then determine if the bet is a winner. For example, if you bet the Point Spread on Vancouver at (-1), and Vancouver won the match 1-0, then the Point Spread result would actually be a Draw.

Same Game Parlay

“Same Game Parlay” or “SGP” means a type of PlayNow Sports Bet consisting of a parlay with a minimum of two distinct selections from the same event.

Scorecast

A bet requiring the prediction of both the player to score first AND correct score in the game or match (for example, Messi to score first AND Barcelona to win 2-0). The odds of both outcomes are combined into one offer (single). We do not fully void a Scorecast if the player does not partake in the game instead the bet is settled as a Correct Score single bet. The first goalscorer part of the bet is governed by the same rules as first goalscorer single bets - own goals do not count and if your player either comes on before the first goal is scored or goes off without scoring, the entire bet is deemed as a non-winner.

Selection

A betting offer with associated odds that can added to Bet Slip to become a Pick.

A bet offered for a Team to win both the first half AND the second half. For example, if the result of the match Vancouver vs. Portland was 4-0 at half time and 5-2 at full time; the bet “Vancouver to win both halves” would NOT be a winner (as the second half result was 1-2 in Portland’s favour). This should not be confused with a “Half Time/Full Time” bet, whereby with this same game outcome, the bet "Vancouver Half Time/Vancouver Full Time" would be the winning selection.

What does this error mean?

the odds, line or availability of one or more picks has changed error example

The pick may have changed and it is no longer available; the event may have now started or completed; or liability limits may have been reached.

PlayNow's odds are dynamic and can change in real time dependent on numerous factors. As an event nears starting time, begins or is already in play, the odds and bets associated with that event can change, suspend, or be taken off site without prior notice.

Sports Action

Sports Action and PlayNow Sports currently provide sports bettors with the 'best of both worlds', providing two unique sports betting options to all B.C. residents of 19 years of age or older. While events and types of bets available for Sports Action are often similar to events also offered on PlayNow Sports (aside from Toto), each are distinct and thereby each feature their own unique set of rules and regulations. Below are some of the common questions Players often ask regarding some of the similarities and differences.

Why does BCLC have two different sports betting brands?

Sports Action launched in B.C. in 1991 and continues to be a popular option for bettors at retail outlets.

BCLC launched the PlayNow online sportsbook in 2012 in an effort to provide B.C. sports bettors a more comparable 'online betting' experience and a more viable option for those B.C. sports bettors who are currently risking their money with illegal or unregulated internet sportsbooks.

The PlayNow sportsbook now offers numerous sports, leagues, tournaments and other bet types. Parlay options, single bets, Futures and Outrights, Bet-Back Bonuses and other promotions, immediate settlement and payment on winning bets, and betting on LIVE games while they're in-play, are some of the other benefits. Along with all of the different offerings on PlayNow, it also has its own betting rules and conditions (different from Sports Action). Be sure to familiarize yourself with the betting rules for the sports you bet on - whether your bets win or lose, they will be determined accordingly.

Where can I place my bets?

Sports Action is available through lottery retailers in convenience stores, major grocery stores, drug stores, gas stations, BCLC branded lottery kiosks and through bars and pubs throughout the province.

PlayNow Sports is available online at PlayNow.com on your web or mobile device.

Why do the odds on Sports Action and PlayNow Sports differ?

Odds on Sports Action games cannot be changed after they are posted and a risk premium (slightly lower odds) is therefore, applied to account for the added advantage provided to the bettor. Because PlayNow Sports is offered online and through a different system than Sports Action, PlayNow has additional dynamic liability controls in place. These controls include the ability to change the odds on an event if necessary and/or setting variable betting limits on an event, which generally enables PlayNow to offer higher odds.

Why do the odds change on PlayNow but stay the same on Sports Action?

PlayNow Sports is offered through a different system than Sports Action, allowing for dynamic, or changing, odds. Odds on PlayNow may often shift based on numerous factors affecting an event prior to starting (i.e. injuries, weather, etc.); and even more frequently for bets offered on "Live" events.

Unlike PlayNow odds, Sports Action odds cannot be adjusted once they have been posted. Due to the additional advantage this provides to the bettor, Sports Action odds are typically more conservative.

Why doesn't Sports Action have all of the same Sports/Leagues/Events as PlayNow?

While both PlayNow and Sports Action provide various betting options on sporting events, the two brands are operationally distinct so there are many differences between them.

Sports Action currently offers a maximum of 240 events per week (Oddset, Point Spread, Over/Under), selecting the most popular betting events available.

Toto is a 'pools' offering unique to Sports Action players. PlayNow Pools is only available for players on PlayNow.com.

PlayNow Sports is not restricted in the number of sports/leagues/events/bets offered.

Why aren't all of the same types of bets offered on PlayNow Sports, offered on Sports Action?

Sports Action currently offers six unique betting options, played through unique selection slips at retail outlets (Oddset 3-Outcome, Oddset 2-Outcome, Point Spread, Over/Under, Props and Toto) and adheres to the specific rules and regulations for these offers. PlayNow Sports, which is offered online (and not through a specific selection slip) features a broader variety of ways to bet.

If a game or event is already available for betting on PlayNow why can't it also be available now on Sports Action?

When odds are posted on PlayNow for any game (for example the Money Line on an NFL game), this actually has no bearing as to when odds will become available for Sports Action 2-Outcome Oddset. Sports Action menus are posted every Monday and Thursday morning however some odds are posted each morning for certain sports. PlayNow Sports can post odds further in advance with the ability to adjust odds as necessary due to any potential changes or updates that may affect the games offered. PlayNow Sports similarly can post odds on events at any point during the day, whereas Sports Action menus are more limited with an inability to update the odds.

What if I don't have a computer - can I still bet on PlayNow?

It is not required that players own a computer to bet on PlayNow.com, but you do need to have access to a computer or smart phone or tablet. (i.e. you could use a computer at a friend's house, or at a library or internet café to access PlayNow.com).

Why doesn't BCLC also offer PlayNow Sports where I can buy Sports Action?

Due to operational system requirements, PlayNow Sports cannot currently be offered in our channel of lottery retailers via the lottery terminal. However, with the PlayNow sportsbook also available on mobile devices, you can make your bets on PlayNow wherever you are!

Sports Action menus are available online at https://lotto.bclc.com/sports-action/, however Sports Action bets may only be purchased at authorized retailers.

Will Sports Action be offering "Live" betting?

Because PlayNow Sports is online, and offered through a different system, the dynamic liability controls allow PlayNow to offer Live betting on games already in progress. These controls include the ability to change the odds of a "Live" event and setting variable limits on events and bets.

Since PlayNow already offers betting on 'Live' events, there are no current plans to offer Live betting on Sports Action.

Why can I combine Props within the same event with Sports Action, but not on PlayNow Sports?

PlayNow Sports restricts correlated parlays on props within the same event, and as such can offer higher odds on these types of bets.

Sports Action already accounts for potential correlation in the Prop bets offered, and therefore combining props within the same event is possible.

What bets on PlayNow are similar to the Sports Action games?

While Sports Action and PlayNow Sports each feature their own unique set of rules and regulations, there are similarities in the bets offered. For all conditions for Sports Action and PlayNow Sports please review the Game Conditions. Below is a brief comparison of comparable Sports Action bets found on PlayNow Sports:

Sports Action Oddset 3-outcome

For most sports, there is typically an option to choose either of two teams/players to WIN or a TIE on PlayNow. The names and rules of these bets on PlayNow will vary based on the sport and league. Some examples of these bets include Win-Draw-Win , Win-Tie-Win & 60 Minute Line .

Currently, Basketball features an 'Oddset 3 way' market that features a tie result if either team wins by 5 or less points.

Why aren’t single bets available on Sports Action?

With the passing of Bill C-218 in June 2021, BCLC now offers single-event betting through the PlayNow sportsbook. BCLC hopes to offer single-event betting on Sports Action potentially sometime in 2022.

Why isn't betting on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Boxing or other sports like Cycling or Motor Racing available on Sports Action?

BCLC now offers both fighting and racing sports for betting in the PlayNow sportsbook. These sports are currently unavailable with Sports Action but will be added at some point in the future.

Why can I parlay different bet types with PlayNow but not on Sports Action?

PlayNow is not purchased through using a Selection Slip and therefore bets can be created by selecting picks across different types of bets (i.e. A Money Line selection can be parlayed with a Point Spread selection and a Total Points selection, all within a single bet).

How do I interpret the odds on PlayNow - and why are there different available formats for the odds?

Unlike Sports Action which displays odds in a decimal format, PlayNow gives you the option to view the odds in 3 different formats. To change the odds format, use the odds format selector found near the bottom of the left navigation bar and select your preferred format from the drop down menu.
Below is brief description of the 3 different formats:

Decimal

With Decimal odds, multiply the value of the odds with your wager to determine your potential win. The outcome with the lowest odds is projected as the most likely outcome (or 'favourite') and vice-versa the outcome with the highest odds being the least likely to occur (also known as the 'dog').

Example: With decimal odds of 2.50 and wager amount of $10, this bet would potentially return $25.

For a parlay bet, the total odds of a bet are determined by multiplying the value of all the odds and then multiplying by the amount bet. The Return from a winning bet when using Decimal odds includes the original stake or wager in this calculation.

Example: With decimal odds of 2.50 and 4.00 and wager amount of $10, this bet would potentially return $100.

American

American odds (also sometimes referred to as "Money Line" odds) reveal the amount you must wager or can win on any selection based on a $100 increment. The favoured outcome is always displayed as a negative number. A negative number expresses the dollar amount that would need to be wagered in order to win $100, while a positive number expresses the dollar amount that would be won from a $100 wager.

Example: If the odds offered on a particular outcome are -110, it means that in order to 'win' $100 you would need to bet $110. If the odds are +110, it means that if you wagered $100, you would win $110. In this example you would calculate your payout by also adding your initial stake (wager).

Fractional

With Fractional odds, the numerator represents the amount to win from the wager amount shown in denominator. Example: Odds of 1/3 mean that bettor would win $1 for each $3 staked (thus equal to 1.33 in decimal format), and 2/1 mean that bettor wins $2 for each unit staked (thus equal 3.00 in decimal format). So, with a stake of $100, potential win on first bet is $133.33, and on the second bet, potential win is $300.
